As many of you have heard the unfortunate news. Ethan was in the Critical Care Unit at Marian Medical Center in Santa Maria. He has since been transferred to Cottage Hospital for a 6 week intensive Rehabilitation Program. We have put together an online fundraiser and charitable events locally to help cover Ethan's expenses. Please check out the "events" tab for details about upcoming fundraisers.
On February 12th Ethan was struck by a limb from a falling 150ft Eucalyptus tree while clearing a large grove on a friend's property. He was found minutes later by his girlfriend and rushed to the ER with a broken femur (point of contact with the tree) and severe head trauma from the resulting fall (not from the tree, but his standing height). He has since received a titanium rod in his leg, stitches and staples, and is battling the neurological effects of a traumatic head injury.
I am witness to the many lives this guy has touched: as a family member, a boyfriend, a close friend, a teammate at Cabrillo High School and Cuesta College, a co-worker to many at Refugio and Oceano State Parks, and last but not least as the lifeguard who has dedicated the past 7 years to caring for the lives of complete strangers at the Oceano Dunes. His accolades and achievements often pass with a silent cheer. Those that do hear about his rescues and success stories know his most popular responses, "it is just business as usual" or "another day at the office."
It is troublesome to believe his dedication to life guarding and his position within the state parks will leave him faced with a hospital bill unaided by medical insurance. But, this is why we have friends I suppose...
So, I am asking if we can show our support for Ethan. There are a few ways you can help!
1) Keep him in your thoughts and prayers!
2) Forward this email to anyone who knows the guy or interested in donating to his fund.
3) Spread the word and donate to the "Hadley Surf Rescue Fund"
4) Volunteers that would be interested in approaching a local business or restaurant (preferably in Pismo or SLO) to arrange a dinner or event that would donate proceeds to his fund!
(Please contact the email below if interested in #4)
In the meantime, a PayPal Donation account has been established to help cover Ethan's amounting hospital expenses and re-establishment post hospital. Any contribution you can make is appreciated and very helpful. Every dollar will support his direct expenses or any organizations assisting his cause. The Paypal Account has been dubbed the "Hadley Surf Rescue Fund," in the hopes to return this humble hero to his passion. Please join me in my donation and this great cause.
You can access the donation page following the links around the blog.
Sincerely,
A Friend
PS- At this time, please give the family space as they are still negotiating the emotional moments and stress accompanied with such accidents. If you would like to request details about the donation page or updates regarding Ethan's progress, please use the following email: hadley.surf.rescue@gmail.com
